Welcome to Missouri Crematory

The Missouri Crematory website is one of the most preferred websites for information about cremation in Missouri and crematories located throughout the state of Missouri.

Prior to the past decade, the most common means of final disposition of a loved one in Missouri was to bury the casketed remains in a cemetery. As the popularity of cremation as a means of final disposition has grown, so has the number of licensed crematories in the state. Our goal at Missouri Crematory is to provide helpful information regarding the rules and regulations required in the operation of a crematory and to help families find a reputable crematory in their area when the need arises. Check back often as we intend to update information about any rule and regulation changes that occur, and information regarding the locations of crematories in Missouri.

All licensed crematories in Missouri are under the jurisdiction of the Missouri State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. No body shall be cremated in the state except in a funeral establishment licensed by the board as a Function B establishment. Function B establishments shall have the authority to cremate dead human bodies and to transport dead human bodies to and from the funeral establishment. This establishment  shall have a functioning cremation chamber except as otherwise provided by Chapter 333, RSMo, and the rules of the Board.

In no event shall any licensee or licensed establishment cremate human remains in the same retort used for cremating non-human remains.

An establishment licensed only as a Function B establishment is prohibited from the care and preparation of dead human bodies other than by cremating, and shall also be prohibited from embalming, making funeral arrangements or cremation arrangements with any unlicensed person, conducting visitations and funeral ceremonies, and furnishing any funeral service in connection with the disposition of dead human bodies or selling funeral merchandise.

In other words, establishments licensed only as a Function B establishment is a crematory that specifically provides the cremation services through the use of their crematory to funeral homes who are licensed to make all of the necessary arrangements for the cremation of dead human bodies but do not have a crematory to actually do the cremating process. Function B only establishments are generally associated to a cemetery, burial vault company, or mortuary service business which do not deal directly with the public but work specifically for licensed funeral homes.

However there are a number of licensed funeral homes in Missouri that in addition to their classification for (Function A license as well as Function C or Function D license which generally speaking allow them to operate a full service funeral home) that also have a Function B establishment license which allows them to provide for the actual cremation process at their facility in addition to providing whatever type of arrangements necessary to accommodate their families wishes no matter what the family’s choices might be.

Our focus at Missouri Crematory is specifically on those funeral homes who also have Function B establishment license (the license necessary to operate a crematory) in addition to the other classification license requirements to operate a full service funeral establishment. These firms in our opinion can not only provide for the cremation process but can accommodate the families they serve with any other needs the family might have. One such funeral home “Parker Funeral Service and Crematory” is located in Columbia Missouri.
